Some of the cities where the facility will be launched are Bengaluru, Hassan, Mandya, Mysuru, Madikeri, Dharmasthala, Mangaluru, Kundapur, Shivamogga, Harihar, Davangere, Tumakuru, Kolar and Chitradurga.

Right now, four bus stations in Bengaluru are undergoing the pilot survey — Kempegowda (Majestic), Shanthinagar, Peenya and Mysuru Road.  Once the study is complete and all errors are ironed out, the corporation will roll out the facility in its 14 divisions.

“The KSRTC is the first public transport operator in India to provide free Wi-Fi in tier-1, 2 and 3 cities. Thousands of  passengers will benefit from this daily. They can connect with their family or surf the Internet,” said Rajender Kumar Kataria, Managing Director, KSRTC. “We provide access to our bus stations, while a private company is setting up the facility. We don’t pay anything as the company gets access to all areas of the bus station. It can earn revenue through advertisement and make up for the cost of establishment.”

A computer savvy passenger, Rajesh Kumar said the facility would be useful. “If we can’t connect to the Internet in the bus, we can at least do so at a bus stand. There may be a limited time within which the facility can be accessed. We can send and receive e-mails and communicate on important matters within one hour, the time given for access. It’s good to know that railway stations and bus stations are going net-friendly.”
